Hiroshi Iwatani helped launch the Japanese music magazine rockin'on in the 1970s, writing about rock as a way of thinking about the individual, society and freedom. From the 1980s he turned to computers, which he saw as tools for individuals at a time when they belonged to a few specialists. For many years he also took in abandoned dogs and cats and lived with them together with his family.
This project aims to publish the large body of writing that grew out of that experience as a single book. It is not written by an animal-welfare expert: Iwatani openly describes what he did not know, the mistakes he made and the animals he could not save — such as feeding a cat human food out of affection and making it ill. The organisers note that some passages will need corrections or annotations to reflect today's veterinary knowledge.
